How to Install

Outdoor SlatWall™ Battens are a non-structural decorative system, so they should never be fixed directly to a solid wall or used as safety balustrading. Instead, fix them to a frame or a subframe (timber batten, metal rail or aluminium) anchored to the structure first. This also leaves a rear gap for ventilation and drainage. Set support rails at a maximum of 600mm centres. Pre-drill each batten with a 5mm bit, then drive one stainless steel screw per batten at every rail, perpendicular to the face, until the head sits flush. Don’t overtighten the screws, as this can distort the hollow profile. Use 316 stainless steel 12g x 65mm screws for timber frames, or 12g x 45mm self-tapping screws for metal. Face-fixed screw heads can be hidden with colour-matched exterior paint, or you can rear fix for a clean front. Battens expand and contract, so leave 1mm per lineal metre at each end and double that at butt joints. Keep clear of soil, paving, decking and overhead surfaces. Finish by gluing the caps on last with MS fast grab adhesive. Refer to our full installation guide for more details.

Disclaimer

This tool gives you a good estimate, but it’s not always exact. If your wall height is taller than one panel, it may suggest an extra full panel per row, even if only a small piece is needed. Remember, panels can often be cut to fit multiple rows. Mixing panel sizes can also help reduce waste and cost.

Form Meets Performance

Combining the strength and consistency of composite construction with the natural warmth of timber, Outdoor SlatWall™ Battens are a considered solution for exterior projects. Use them across façades, privacy screens, boundary features, entryways, alfresco areas and architectural detailing.

One Batten, Endless Possibilities

Lightweight construction allows for easy handling and installation across a range of applications. Battens can be installed vertically or horizontally, with adjustable spacing to suit the project, whether creating screening, architectural detailing or a defined outdoor feature.

Frequently asked questions

What can Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Batten be used for?

Quite a lot, honestly. These battens are built for exterior architectural detailing wherever you want clean, natural-looking lines outdoors: privacy screens, façades, boundary features, entryways, alfresco areas, pergolas, planter boxes, and even as a cladding substructure. Because they install vertically or horizontally with adjustable spacing, they suit a full screening wall just as easily as a subtle accent along an entryway or fence line. Both residential and commercial projects are a genuine fit here, so whether you're screening a side courtyard at home or detailing a café façade, the same batten does the job. If you're picturing a specific application and want a second opinion on spacing or layout, get in touch and we can talk through your project.

How do Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Battens hold up outdoors, are they actually weatherproof?

Yes, and that's really the whole point of building them from WPC (wood-plastic composite) with a fully protective capping layer rather than solid timber. They resist moisture, UV fading, insects and rot, the kind of damage that eventually catches up with real timber outdoors no matter how well you maintain it. There's no oiling, sanding or painting required, ever, the finish is built in rather than applied on top. That's a genuinely different maintenance reality to a timber batten, which needs regular attention to keep looking good and stay structurally sound outdoors.

Which Outdoor Batten colour should I choose, and are they all priced the same?

Yes, every colour is priced the same at $45 per 3.6m length, White, Tasmanian Oak, Walnut, Black, Blackbutt and Teak, so it comes down to which tone suits the space rather than budget. White reads crisp and contemporary against a rendered façade, while timber tones like Tasmanian Oak or Teak lean warmer and blend naturally into a garden or timber-heavy exterior, and Black makes more of a bold architectural statement. Since these sit outside where lighting shifts throughout the day, order a sample or two before committing to a full run, it's the easiest way to see how a tone actually reads against your own brickwork, render or landscaping.

What's the difference between Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Batten and Outdoor Cladding?

They're built for different jobs. Outdoor Panel is a full cladding panel, designed to cover a wall or surface outright. Outdoor Batten is a single 60 x 40mm profile run to 3.6m, meant to be fixed individually onto a sub-frame with whatever spacing you choose between each piece, so you get a screened, slatted look rather than a solid clad surface. If you want full coverage and a seamless finish, Outdoor Panel is the one to reach for. If you're after that architectural screening effect, spaced battens letting light and airflow through, or a more custom, adjustable look, Outdoor Batten is the better fit.

What are Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Battens made from?

They're made from wood-plastic composite (WPC), a core material with a fully capped protective coating over it, rather than solid timber. That capping layer is what gives the battens their resistance to moisture, UV fading, insects and rot without needing any coating, oil or paint applied afterwards. Each batten measures 60 x 40mm and runs a full 3.6m in length, which means fewer joins and a cleaner overall run across a screen, façade or fence line than you'd typically get from shorter timber lengths. It's a considered, low-maintenance way to bring the warmth of a timber look outdoors without timber's ongoing upkeep.

How do you install Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Battens?

Battens fix onto a horizontal sub-frame, with supports spaced no more than 600mm apart. Pre-drill each batten with a 5mm bit at every point it meets the frame, then secure it with one screw per rail, we'd recommend the outdoor batten screw built for exactly this. For a clean, hidden-screw finish, drive the screw 8 to 10mm below the surface and tap in a colour-matched plug, or if you'd rather a visible fixing, drive it flush with the face instead. Both vertical and horizontal orientations work, and spacing between battens is entirely up to you and the look you're after.

Can the spacing between Outdoor SlatWallâ„¢ Battens be adjusted?

Yes, spacing is entirely up to you, there's no fixed gap you're locked into. Tighter spacing gives more privacy and a fuller, more solid-looking screen, while wider gaps let more light and airflow through and read a bit more open and architectural. The battens are also flexible enough to run vertically or horizontally depending on the effect you're after, so between orientation and spacing there's a fair bit of room to tailor the finished look to your specific façade, screen or entryway.

How do you finish the ends of the battens neatly?

With Outdoor Batten Capping, sold separately, and honestly worth adding to your order rather than an afterthought. It gives cut ends and exposed edges a clean, concealed finish rather than leaving the composite core visible, which matters most on a screen or façade where the ends are on show. If you're planning a full run across the Outdoor Batten range, it's the small addition that takes the finished look from "good DIY job" to properly professional.
